  NSF International Opens Toxin Testing Lab in China  
  Inquiries regarding testing for toxins have increased due to recent product recalls and increased media coverage of those recalls  
  NSF International, Inc. (Ann Arbor, Mich.), a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety, has established a testing lab in Shanghai, China, to screen for the presence of melamine and other toxins in products headed for the United States and other countries.   New Fiber-Optic Technology Could Enhance Food Safety  
  Although the technology has great potential, a number of questions remain unanswered  
  A new light source based on fiber-optic technology promises to improve inspection of food, produce, paper, currency, recyclables, and other products, says Gary Carver, PhD, the optical scientist developing the technology. Carver's lab is at Princeton Lightwave (Cranbury, N.J.), which partnered with OFS Labs, a division of Furukawa Electric in Somerset, N.J., to work on the project. ( more )  
 
  Protecting U.S. Borders from Insect Invaders  
  Each year, Customs and Border Protection inspectors intercept tens of thousands of pests thought to be a risk  
  On a typical day, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency inspectors at various ports of entry seize more than 4,000 prohibited meats, plant materials, and animal products. They also seize products containing insects that, if gone undetected, could threaten U.S. agriculture and its economy, says Erlinda P. Byrd, a spokeswoman for the CBP. ( more )

  The software can determine where a finished product was shipped from and where all the ingredients came from in less than four hours  
  How can food processors quickly trace the source of contamination in a bag of prepared salad that contains a variety of ingredients from different farms? Nick Bova, an engineer and expert in food chain supply planning, says his company has the answer: a software platform that allows them to trace, within minutes, where the finished product was shipped from and where all the ingredients came from, well ahead of the four hours mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
